Chomp! This is what happens when you take your eye off of a black-footed albatross while you're banding it. The bird got a hold of my thumb and then twisted it's head from side to side to get the maximum, flesh-tearing effect. A little while later I got a bunch of sand up underneath the flapper. It took a while to clean the whole thing out. Hey Lauren, please don't show this to Daniel!!

too late!! actually it's quite funny the way it happened...i wanted to show daniel the blackfooted mojo dance so i brought up your blog and your bloody thumb was the first thing that came up!! (knowing instantly that it was a bird-wound i put my hand infront of the screen and said, ehm...pretend like you didn't see that...let me just scroll down -- so i did, left him with the bird dance and then he started laughing hysterically a few minutes later - 'he even gave you a warning!' he shouted to me laughing ;) heh heh ....i'm just shocked he actually went back to investigate -- probably one of those things where imagination is worse than reality ;)
p.s. sorry about your thumb!! those albatrosses can be meeeheean!!
